2020 has been a challenging year. In Australia we started the new decade with devastating bushfires. The fires had barely burned when the COVID-19 pandemic emerged, and since then there have been locust outbreaks and other ‘natural’ disasters across the Majority world, as well as the emergence of mass protests in the US following the murder of George Floyd by a police officer. The #blacklivesmatter protests have extended from the US to other parts of the world, including Australia. On Sunday I attended the Cairns protest, and the below photo essay captures some of the feel of the day. Personally, I found this peaceful act of solidarity greatly energising. The manifold global challenges that we face require mass social movements, and it is wonderful to see people’s voice reemerging.
